My kid remembers his Science facts but still can’t score well for his Science paper!

Sound familiar? Let’s figure out why.

The Science paper is split into 2 main components: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Open Ended Questions (OEQ). The former tests if a student has knowledge of concepts within a topic, while the latter tests their ability to understand, apply and explain.

Moving into Primary 5 and 6, there is a fundamental change in the way Open-Ended Questions are structured as well as a shift in how they are answered. Students must be equipped with stronger skills for interpreting questions, finding and using keywords, and writing about outcomes clearly while explaining cause-effect relationships.

It is this section where effective answering techniques differentiate an ‘A’ student from an ‘A*’ student for Science.

Often, it is the OEQ section that students have trouble with, thus our 3-day “Upper Primary Open-Ended Questions Skills” course is tailored to impart the skills needed to answer open-ended questions confidently and well. Here are some key skills that will be covered/taught:

  • Identifying key components of a question.
  • Identifying the concept that is being tested in a question.
  • Expanding on the identified concept in relation to the key components.
